How to secure evidence from online platforms

A host cancels, a seller disappears, a shop sends the wrong item, a fake review appears. On every platform, the content you need can change or vanish within hours. Here is one method that works everywhere, plus a detailed guide for each major platform.

Platforms Disputes Marketplaces Evidence

In short

  • ✓Most platform disputes are lost because the listing, chat or account is gone before anyone secures it.
  • ✓Capture first, report second: reporting or opening a case often makes the content disappear.
  • ✓Public pages can be captured by URL; chats, bookings and orders behind login need capture in your own browser.
  • ✓Also download the platform’s own records and use its official dispute channel within the deadline.
  • ✓A sealed, timestamped capture is much harder to challenge than a screenshot.

Why platform disputes are lost

Platform disputes rarely fail because the victim was wrong. They fail because, by the time anyone looks, the proof is gone. Online platforms are built to change constantly, and the other party often has every reason to change them faster.

  • Listings are edited or deleted: the photos, description or price you relied on can be replaced in seconds.
  • Accounts vanish: scam sellers and fake shops delete their profile or are banned, taking their history with them.
  • Chats disappear: messages can be unsent, conversations closed, or the whole thread removed together with the account.
  • Resolution windows are short: many platforms only accept a dispute within the deadline in their policy, often just a few days.
Reporting, blocking or opening a case often triggers the very change you need to prove. Secure the evidence first, then report.

The universal 5-step method

The details differ from platform to platform, but the order of steps is the same everywhere.

  1. Capture before you report. Before you contact the other party, leave a review or open a case, secure everything as it looks right now.
  2. Capture public pages via their URL: the listing, the shop page, the seller or host profile, reviews and public posts.
  3. Capture content behind login in your own browser: chats, bookings, order details and payment confirmations are only visible to you when you are logged in.
  4. Keep the platform’s own records: confirmation emails, invoices, and a data export from your account settings where the platform offers one.
  5. Report through the official channel within the deadline: use the platform’s resolution centre, then your bank or card issuer, consumer authority or police if needed.
Only capture what you can lawfully access with your own account. Never log into someone else’s account or use fake profiles to get access: evidence obtained that way can be inadmissible and itself a crime.

Evidence versus a screenshot

A screenshot is an image file. Anyone can edit it in minutes, and it shows nothing about where it came from or when. When the other side says it was faked, you have little to answer with. A forensic capture records the page itself, not just a picture of it.

  • The full page as a screenshot plus the source HTML and a network log of what the server actually sent.
  • SHA-256 hashes of every file, so any later change is detectable.
  • An eIDAS qualified timestamp from an EU-accredited provider and a Bitcoin anchor proving when it existed.
  • Independent verification: anyone can check the result offline, without trusting us.

How to use the platform guides

Pick your platform above. Each guide lists exactly what to capture there, where the platform’s own records are, how its dispute process works and what to do if it fails. No court can be guaranteed to accept any evidence, but properly sealed evidence is much harder to challenge.

GetProofAnchor is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of the platforms mentioned. Their names are used only to describe them.

Frequently asked questions

Should I report the problem to the platform first?

Secure the evidence first, then report straight away. Reporting often leads to the listing, chat or account being changed or removed, and you may not be able to see it afterwards.

Can I capture private chats and bookings?

Yes, your own. Content behind login can only be captured in your own logged-in browser, for example with the browser widget. A server-side capture by URL cannot see it.

Is a data export from the platform enough?

It is valuable and you should request it, but it may take time, may not include deleted content and does not show how the public listing looked. Use it alongside your own captures.

How quickly do I have to act?

As fast as possible. Content can change within hours, and many platforms only accept disputes within a short deadline set in their policy. Check it in the platform’s help centre.

Will a court accept this evidence?

Courts assess evidence freely, so nobody can guarantee acceptance. A sealed, timestamped capture with source data is much harder to challenge than a screenshot.

Do I need a subscription?

No. For public pages, the one-time Starter pack or Assisted Capture is enough. Capturing content behind login with the browser widget requires a subscription plan.
